Top 10 Things to Do in Stockholm

Stockholm, also known as the “Venice of the North,” is the city where most of Sweden’s cultural institutions are located, including 100 museums and a vibrant cultural scene. If you’re visiting this largest city in Scandinavia, you won’t be bored, as there are many things to do. Here’s our list of the top 10 activities to do in Stockholm.

Visit the Photography Museum, Fotografiska

To start our list, we suggest you visit one of Stockholm’s most popular museums, the Fotografiska museum. This renowned venue offers exhibitions throughout the year, with works by international artists, making it an ideal place to discover a wide variety of art in a group while delighting your eyes. Additionally, Fotografiska also offers photography courses and a restaurant with a stunning view of Stockholm.

Coffee break at Johan & Nyström

In the charming neighborhood of Södermalm, we suggest taking a coffee break at Johan & Nyström after a busy day of shopping. This establishment is highly regarded by coffee lovers in Stockholm and also offers classes to introduce you to coffee culture, from seed to cup. It’s a must-visit place for coffee lovers looking to learn more about this iconic drink.

Shop in the SoFo neighborhood

For a change of pace and to relax, nothing beats a day of shopping. The bohemian neighborhood of SoFo (South of Folkungagatan) is an ideal place for this. With its design and fashion boutiques, this laid-back neighborhood is full of cafes and restaurants and will keep you occupied all day. Very popular with tourists and Stockholm locals, SoFo is a trendy neighborhood not to be missed. However, we recommend not going there too early, as the shops generally don’t open until 11 am on weekends.

Swedish luxury store, Nordiska Kompaniet

In Stockholm, the city’s most luxurious store is Nordiska Kompaniet, a highly regarded establishment. As soon as you enter, you’ll be dazzled by the grand and sumptuous hall. There, you’ll find the biggest names in cosmetics, fashion, jewelry, and design. It’s literally the Swedish version of Le Bon Marché, a must-visit place for high-end shopping enthusiasts.

Trädgården

If you’re wondering what to do in the evening during your stay in Stockholm, we recommend Trädgården, an open-air nightclub. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and the music is varied, ranging from dance to vocal house to funk, drum’n’bass, and other genres for music lovers. You’ll find a festive atmosphere and lively crowds, and there are even games such as ping-pong or video games for fun. It’s a club that caters to a wide audience and is ideal for enjoying the summer, although activities take place indoors in winter. Please note that entry to Trädgården is restricted to those aged 21 and over.

Boat ride around Drottningholm Castle

Continuing our list, we suggest taking a boat ride around Drottningholm Castle. You can get there by boat, a very popular means of transportation in Stockholm that offers different routes to admire the surrounding landscapes. Many boat excursions include admission to the castle at no extra charge. The boat ride takes about an hour each way, but shorter excursions are also available for those in a hurry. Note, however, that many routes are only available between April and September due to difficult winter conditions.

Skansen

Stockholm is a very culturally dynamic city and offers many interesting activities. Skansen, a living history museum, is one of the main attractions of the city. This museum allows visitors to discover the traditional way of life of the Swedes through exhibitions on the history and culture of the country. In addition to the exhibitions, Skansen also houses farms with animals and craft shops where you can buy souvenirs. There is also the opportunity to taste traditional dishes and participate in seasonal festivals such as Midsummer, harvest season, or New Year’s Eve. Skansen is therefore the ideal place for a family or friends outing that allows you to immerse yourself in Swedish culture.

Walk along the quayside

To end your day beautifully, we suggest that you take a group walk along the quayside while admiring the magnificent landscape and enjoying a superb sunset. It is an excellent way to relax and bring home a memorable souvenir of your stay in Stockholm. Don’t miss the opportunity to take photos during the “golden hour,” when the sun sets over Gamla Stan.

Sauna

Public baths, also known as “Bastu” by the locals of Stockholm, are very popular throughout the city. They are available in fitness centers, hotels, or sports facilities. These public baths offer a body revitalizing experience that allows you to relax and clear your mind. If you are a tourist, you can opt for a more authentic experience by visiting one of the traditional saunas in the old town, where you will have a wide choice. Saunas are usually separated for men and women, and it is customary to bathe naked. Although this may seem strange at first, you will quickly get used to it. Some hotels even offer massages after your bastu session.

The Hornstull Marknad

We end our list of things to do in Stockholm by recommending that you visit the city’s outdoor market, the Hornstull Marknad, which is highly appreciated by locals. It is a favorite place for summer weekends and you will find a variety of items such as clothing, jewelry, home decor, and artwork. The relaxed atmosphere of the place is enchanting, attracting visitors of all ages. It is an ideal market to stroll around with family on weekends and enjoy the many food stands.
